Ontario Braces for Most Significant Supercell Storm Threat of the Year

Heat and Humidity to Fuel Severe Thunderstorm Risk Across Southern and Eastern Ontario on Tuesday

A surge of summer-like heat combined with returning humidity will set the stage for a severe thunderstorm threat across southern and eastern Ontario on Tuesday, driven by a potent Colorado low.

Temperatures are forecast to climb into the mid- to high-20s across much of the region, with southwestern Ontario potentially reaching 30°C — possibly marking Canada’s first 30-degree reading of the year.

While Monday’s weather will offer voters pleasant, mild conditions near 20°C as they head to the polls, the atmosphere will shift quickly by Tuesday. Rising heat and humidex values will destabilize the region, priming it for storm development.

There’s a significant risk for severe thunderstorms, with large hail, strong winds, and heavy downpours being the primary hazards. Forecasters are also warning of a low, but non-zero, risk of an isolated tornado or two, thanks to favorable low-level shear and low cloud bases.

Residents are urged to monitor the forecast closely on Tuesday and stay alert for any watches or warnings, as strong storms could develop rapidly.

Thunderstorm season appears ready to ramp up in dramatic fashion.
