Final Carbon Tax Rebate Set for April 22, but Some Canadians May Face Delays
The last-ever Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) will be issued on Tuesday, April 22—but not all Canadians will see the funds in their bank accounts right away.
The consumer carbon tax was officially scrapped on April 1, following Prime Minister Mark Carney’s first major move in office. Carney called the tax “too divisive when we should be pulling together.”
Although the fuel charge is now gone, the federal government will still deliver one final CCR payment this month.
Previously known as the Climate Action Incentive Payment (CAIP), the CCR is a quarterly, tax-free rebate intended to help eligible individuals and families offset the cost of federal pollution pricing.
Who Will Receive the Final CCR?
According to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), those who filed their 2024 income tax and benefit return electronically by April 2 are first in line to receive the payment on April 22.
If you haven’t filed your taxes yet—don’t worry. You can still receive the rebate, but only after your 2024 return has been assessed.
Eligibility and Provincial Coverage
The rebate is available to residents of provinces where the federal pollution pricing system applies:
-
Alberta
-
Saskatchewan
-
Manitoba
-
Ontario
-
Nova Scotia
-
New Brunswick
-
Newfoundland and Labrador
-
Prince Edward Island
To qualify, recipients must be at least 19 years old in the month before the payment is issued. Those under 19 may also qualify if they have (or had) a spouse or common-law partner, or are (or were) a parent living with their child.
Families with children who are registered for the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) or GST credit will automatically receive additional amounts for eligible children, provided they meet the following conditions at the start of the payment month:
-
Under 19 years old
-
Lives with you
-
You are primarily responsible for their care
-
The child is registered for the CCR, CCB, or GST/HST credit
Residents of British Columbia, Quebec, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories are excluded, as those jurisdictions have their own pollution pricing systems.
How Much Will You Get?
Here are the estimated CCR payments for single adults without children:
-
Alberta: $225
-
Manitoba: $150
-
Ontario: $140
-
Saskatchewan: $188
-
New Brunswick: $95
-
Nova Scotia: $103
-
Prince Edward Island: $110
-
Newfoundland and Labrador: $149
Residents in small and rural communities may also receive a 20% rural supplement. This additional amount is automatically included for those living outside a Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) in the eligible provinces, as long as they plan to remain outside the CMA as of April 1, 2024.
In Prince Edward Island, all residents are eligible for the rural supplement by default.
However, the CRA recently identified overpayments of the rural supplement. Impacted individuals began receiving notices about repayment requirements starting April 15.
Canadians can calculate their rebate amount based on province, marital status, and number of children using the federal government’s online tool.
