Justin Trudeau Resigns as Prime Minister, Mark Carney to Be Sworn In
Justin Trudeau will officially resign as Canada’s 23rd prime minister this morning, ending nearly a decade in office. In a private meeting at Rideau Hall, he will formally step down and recommend that Governor General Mary Simon invite Mark Carney to form the next government.
Trudeau, who introduced the Canada Child Benefit, legalized marijuana, and led Canada through the COVID-19 pandemic, faced mounting criticism in recent years over affordability issues, including the carbon tax and housing.
“Thank you, Canada—for trusting in me, for challenging me, and for granting me the privilege to serve the best country, and the best people, on earth,” Trudeau posted on social media Friday morning.
Carney, the prime minister-designate, will take the oath of office and present his new cabinet in a more subdued ceremony than Trudeau’s 2015 inauguration. The swearing-in is scheduled for 11 a.m. EDT, with CTV News providing live coverage.
Sources confirm Carney plans to significantly downsize his cabinet, signaling a shift ahead of a possible election. His first official itinerary, released Friday, states he will take media questions outside Rideau Hall following the ceremony.
Among the pressing issues he is expected to address are his foreign policy priorities, plans to meet U.S. President Donald Trump and other world leaders, and whether he will recall Parliament or call an early election. Carney will convene his first cabinet meeting at 2 p.m. EDT.
