Canada Issues Shampoo Recall Over Foul Odor Concern
Massive Shampoo Recall Issued in Canada Over Contamination Concerns
Health Canada has announced a major recall of thousands of shampoo units due to potential microbial contamination.
Approximately 95,000 units of amika Mirrorball Shampoo were sold across Canada between May 2023 and November 2024. The products, manufactured by amika LLC in the United States, are also being recalled in the U.S., where over 982,000 units are affected across 31 states, according to The Healthy.
Consumers are being urged to immediately stop using the recalled products, as they may be contaminated with Pluralibacter gergoviae—a bacterium that poses low risk to healthy individuals but could increase infection risks for those with compromised immune systems or pre-existing health conditions.
Reports of Odor and Skin Reactions
As of January 27, 2025, amika has received 48 complaints in Canada regarding a foul odor and two reports of irritation or allergic reactions.
“We have been monitoring recent feedback citing a change in odor and, in rare cases, temporary irritation,” reads a statement on amika’s website.
The company clarified that no serious health issues have been reported and that the recall was initiated after identifying quality concerns at a third-party manufacturing site.
