Ontario and Aroland First Nation Reach Historic Agreement to Link Roads to the Ring of Fire

Ontario and Aroland First Nation Sign Landmark Agreement to Boost Economic Growth and Infrastructure in Northern Ontario

Premier Doug Ford, alongside Greg Rickford, Minister of Northern Development and Minister of Indigenous Affairs and First Nations Economic Reconciliation, and Aroland First Nation Chief Sonny Gagnon, have signed a Shared Prosperity Agreement to drive economic growth and upgrade key infrastructure in Northern Ontario.

This historic agreement includes funding for upgrades to Anaconda and Painter Lake Roads, vital connections leading to the Ring of Fire, and major investments in infrastructure and energy transmission. It also builds on existing agreements with other First Nations partners along the proposed road corridor, laying the groundwork for future partnerships.

Key Highlights of the Agreement:

  • Infrastructure Investments: Upgrading Anaconda and Painter Lake Roads, with a potential Road Advisory Body to oversee the work. These roads will eventually connect to the Marten Falls Community Access Road, Northern Road Link, and Webequie Supply Road, linking First Nations communities to Ontario’s highway network and the Ring of Fire.
  • Energy Transmission Expansion: A $70 million investment for the Greenstone Electricity Transmission Line, in collaboration with multiple First Nations, to improve energy access in the region.
  • Economic Development: Aroland First Nation is exploring opportunities to lead a transload facility and host a smelter, with Ontario’s support in assessing feasibility.
  • Community Growth: A $20 million fund for community infrastructure projects to support business development and well-being, along with an additional $2.27 million for a comprehensive community plan.
  • Resource Revenue Sharing: Ontario, Aroland First Nation, and other nearby First Nations will engage in discussions to share economic benefits from forestry and mining in the region.

Statements from Leaders:

Premier Doug Ford emphasized the urgency of economic development amid global trade uncertainties:

“With the risk of U.S. tariffs, it’s never been more important to unlock the economic potential of the Ring of Fire. This partnership will create jobs, growth, and new opportunities across Northern Ontario.”

Minister Greg Rickford highlighted the long-term benefits of collaboration:

“This agreement strengthens critical infrastructure, enhances Northern Ontario’s global competitiveness, and positions Aroland First Nation as an economic leader in the region.”

Why It Matters:

This partnership supports sustainable development, enhances regional connectivity, and ensures that First Nations communities play a central role in shaping the economic future of Northern Ontario.
