Icebreaker Samuel Risley Arrives Back in Thunder Bay

THUNDER BAY — The Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker Samuel Risley has returned to Thunder Bay Harbour.

The vessel arrived on January 1 and is currently navigating through the Bay.

Earlier, the Port of Thunder Bay noted that recent warmer weather had reduced the need for icebreaking operations as the shipping season approached its final two weeks. However, a recent cold snap has brought freezing conditions to the Bay, prompting the icebreaker’s return.

Environment Canada reported a low of -18°C on Monday, with a brief warming trend expected over the weekend before temperatures drop again to -17°C early next week.

The Port of Thunder Bay anticipates the Samuel Risley will remain in the area until the Soo Locks close on January 15. Additionally, the icebreaker is expected to return in the spring for the start of the new navigation season, though the timing could vary depending on weather conditions.
