PACE Funding Sees Over Threefold Increase, Extends Operating Hours
Thunder Bay – An organization dedicated to supporting homeless individuals in the city is celebrating a significant funding boost, enabling it to expand operations, hire more staff, and extend its hours.
“I jumped for joy when they told me,” said Georgina McKinnon, executive director of PACE, located on Victoria Avenue.
McKinnon shared the news that the District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board (DSSAB) had increased its funding for the program from $50,000 in 2023/24 to $179,000 for 2024/25 — more than tripling its support.
“With this funding, we can extend our hours year-round,” McKinnon said. “Instead of operating 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., PACE will now be open from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekends, all year long.”
Clients of PACE have expressed their enthusiasm for the extended hours, McKinnon noted. “I hear every day that there’s nothing for them to do or nowhere to go on weekends or evenings. This gives them a safe space, reducing the risk of getting into trouble.”
The additional funding also allows PACE to hire five new staff members, ensuring three employees will now be on shift instead of two. “This will ease the workload on staff and improve services for clients by reducing wait times,” McKinnon explained.
McKinnon extended her gratitude to DSSAB, emphasizing the value the new funding brings to the community. “Our clients truly need and appreciate this support,” she said.
Ken Ranta, CEO of DSSAB, praised PACE as “a great partner for us downtown” and highlighted its integral role in complementing emergency shelter services.
“Emergency shelters provide a warm, safe place to stay at night. During the day, PACE offers a space for people to connect with support services, education, and other resources,” Ranta said.
He explained that PACE’s strong track record and essential services made the decision to enhance its funding an easy one for DSSAB’s board. “We value our relationship with PACE and are happy to help them grow their impact,” Ranta added.
