Ontario and Other Provinces Recall Cucumbers Due to Potential Salmonella Risk
U.S. Company Recalls Cucumbers in Canada Over Salmonella Risk
SunFed Produce, LLC, a U.S.-based company, has issued a recall for cucumbers sold in Ontario and other Canadian provinces due to potential salmonella contamination, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
The recall involves whole fresh American cucumbers packaged in bulk cardboard containers labeled “SunFed” or black plastic crates with stickers marked “Agrotato, S.A. de C.V.” The cucumbers were distributed across several Canadian provinces, including Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Ontario, as well as multiple U.S. states.
In a news release, SunFed explained the recall was initiated after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) linked the cucumbers to salmonellosis illnesses reported between October 12 and November 15, 2024.
Salmonella can cause severe infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms in healthy individuals typically include fever, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
The CFIA confirmed it is conducting a food safety investigation and noted that SunFed is actively informing its buyers about the recall. The company emphasized that no other products or farms associated with SunFed are implicated in this incident.
Consumers are advised to discard the affected cucumbers or return them to the place of purchase.
