Emerging Scam Circulating Across Ontario
A new scam is spreading across Ontario, targeting residents in Mississauga, Brampton, and beyond.
Similar to the ‘Mom Help’ and ‘Dropped My Phone in the Toilet’ scams from 2023, this latest scheme starts with a deceptive message:
“Hi, Dad. I’ve got a new phone number. Save it and message me on WhatsApp, please.”
Messages like these can spark panic, confusion, and curiosity, leading parents to act impulsively and contact the provided number.
However, staying calm and alert to potential red flags is crucial. For example, the new number often comes with a 437 area code, linked to the Toronto region, adding to the scam’s credibility.
Peel Regional Police advise against replying to such messages, as any response confirms your number is active, potentially inviting more spam. Instead, delete the message and block the number.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre emphasizes the importance of protecting personal and financial information, warning residents never to trust unknown contacts claiming to be family members.
By staying vigilant, residents can help protect themselves and their families from falling victim to these scams.
