Canada’s TikTok Shutdown Sparks Concerns Over Revenue and Support for Creators
Canadian TikTok creators worry that the federal government’s recent decision to end the app’s Canadian operations could erode their support network and limit their income opportunities.
Toronto-based TikTok culture commentator Mikael Melo explains that the app’s Canadian division offered essential support for local creators by helping with account optimization, resolving technical issues, and securing sponsorships. He fears that this critical support will disappear with the closure.
The federal government ordered TikTok to dissolve its Canadian business on Wednesday due to national security concerns, although the app itself was not banned.
Lifestyle and food content creator Mali Raja, also based in Toronto, shares that TikTok Canada regularly organized pop-up events and digital campaigns to showcase local talent and connect creators with brands. She now feels less motivated to continue producing content, given the platform’s uncertain future in Canada.
Michelle Nguyen, president and chief strategist of Toronto-based social media agency Super Duper, adds that advertisers may hesitate to invest in the platform’s content, potentially leading to a decline in ad revenue for Canadian creators.
