X will soon allow blocked accounts to view your public posts.

X is set to modify its block button functionality, allowing blocked accounts to still view public posts. This change was highlighted by independent app researcher Nima Owji, who spotted the update on X’s website. Elon Musk confirmed the change on Monday, explaining that while blocked accounts will still be prevented from interacting with users who blocked them, they will soon be able to view their public posts.

“The block function will block that account from engaging with, but not block seeing, [a] public post,” Musk tweeted on Monday.

According to Owji, users may no longer see the “You’re blocked” message when attempting to visit a profile that has blocked them. Instead, they’ll have access to the blocked user’s public content, as if they were any other follower. However, blocked accounts will likely still face restrictions on reposting, quoting, or replying to the content. The timeline for this change remains unclear.

Musk noted in his tweet that it was “high time this happened,” referencing that blocked users could previously bypass the block by simply logging out to view a public account’s posts. This loophole is now being addressed with the upcoming changes.

About a decade ago, in 2013, Twitter—now X—attempted a similar adjustment to the block function, which allowed blocked users to view and engage with content.
