Viral Mobile Game Flappy Bird Returns 10 Years After Being Taken Offline
The mobile game sensation Flappy Bird is set to make a comeback, ten years after its creator took it offline.
Back in 2014, Vietnamese developer Dong Nguyen surprised the gaming world by removing Flappy Bird from the App Store and Google Play, despite its daily earnings of tens of thousands of dollars. Nguyen later explained, “I can call Flappy Bird a success of mine. But it also ruins my simple life. So now I hate it.”
Now, Flappy Bird is poised for a relaunch. An expanded version of the game is set to release by the end of October across multiple platforms, including web browsers, with iOS and Android versions scheduled for 2025. However, this revival isn’t from Nguyen but from a group called “The Flappy Bird Foundation,” which describes itself as “a team of passionate fans committed to sharing the game with the world.”
The Flappy Bird Foundation has reportedly acquired the game’s trademark from Gametech Holdings LLC, a U.S. company that appears to have obtained the rights from Nguyen. Additionally, they have secured the rights to the original game and character from Piou Piou vs. Cactus, a mobile game that supposedly inspired Flappy Bird‘s design.
The new team is already planning future updates, featuring new game modes, characters, progression systems, and multiplayer challenges.
Michael Roberts, the lead creative behind the comeback, said, “We are beyond excited to bring Flappy Bird back and deliver a fresh experience that will keep players engaged for years to come. We have big plans for our little Bird!”
The developer of Piou Piou, Kek, is also involved in the revival and expressed his excitement: “This is a milestone for gaming and for me personally. It’s amazing to see how influential Piou Piou has been for developers and millions of gamers. I’m thrilled to work with a passionate team to bring Flappy Bird back to life.”
Notably absent from the announcement is Dong Nguyen, who has remained out of the spotlight since taking Flappy Bird offline and has not posted on social media in years.
