This Week’s Forecast: Cooler Temperatures Ahead After a Warm Summer

Following three consecutive months of warmer-than-average temperatures, city residents can expect a brief cooling period this week. Environment Canada forecasts average-to-below-average temperatures from Thursday through Saturday.

Typically, the high for this time of year is around 20°C, but by Friday, temperatures are expected to reach only 13°C. Showers are possible from Wednesday night through Friday, though meteorologist Peter Kimbell noted that summer isn’t quite over for Thunder Bay.

“We’ll have a couple of nice days in the short term, but the air mass will change Wednesday night. By Thursday morning, people will wake up to rain and cooler temperatures for a few days. The weekend will remain cool, but temperatures will gradually moderate as next week progresses, so the warmer weather isn’t gone for good.”

Data from Environment Canada released Tuesday shows that the average temperature at Thunder Bay Airport in August was about a degree above the long-term average. June and July were also nearly two and three degrees warmer than normal, respectively.

In terms of precipitation, only 57 mm was recorded at the airport last month, significantly below the usual total of 88 mm.
