More Than 300,000 Samsung Stoves Recalled in Canada Due to Fire Risk
Thousands of electric stoves are being recalled in Canada due to a fire risk that has resulted in injuries. Health Canada announced the recall on Thursday, targeting several models of Samsung’s electric slide-in ranges. The recall stems from a design flaw where the front-mounted knobs can be “accidentally activated” through contact with people or pets, creating a potential fire hazard.
Approximately 326,250 units of these affected ranges were sold nationwide between 2013 and August 2024.
Samsung Electronics Canada is offering customers free knob locks or covers, depending on their model, to prevent accidental activation. The company has assured customers that they can continue using the recalled stoves while awaiting the safety devices, but it urges them to take extra precautions.
Health Canada advises users of the recalled stoves to keep children and pets away from the knobs, avoid leaving objects on the range when not in use, and ensure that the knobs are turned off after cooking and before leaving home or going to bed.
For those with Wi-Fi-enabled ranges, Samsung recommends activating the “Cooktop On” notification via the Samsung SmartThings app, which will send alerts if a burner is turned on.
As of Wednesday, Samsung has received 57 reports of incidents and seven reports of injuries related to the affected stoves.
