Certain Canadian provinces will experience temperatures soaring to 30°C. Find out where.
Several Canadian provinces are bracing for a mix of thunderstorms, heat warnings, and air quality alerts as summer weather and ongoing wildfires persist this week.
In northern Alberta, including Mackenzie County and Wood Buffalo, heat advisories indicate that daytime temperatures nearing 30°C will continue until early next week, according to CTV Your Morning’s meteorologist Kelsey McEwen. Environment Canada forecasts that temperatures will moderate by Wednesday.
Similar temperatures are expected in parts of British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.
Heat advisories have also been issued across the territories, including Fort Simpson and Hay River in the Northwest Territories, where temperatures are forecasted to range between 29°C and 35°C during the day. Environment Canada predicts a temperature moderation by Tuesday.
In Nunavut, places like Arviat and Baker Lake will see daytime highs reaching the mid-to-high 20s to low 30s from Monday into Tuesday. For areas under heat warnings, Environment Canada anticipates that a cold front passing Tuesday night into Wednesday will bring temperatures back to seasonal norms by Wednesday afternoon.
Air quality advisories are also in effect in regions under heat warnings, as wildfire smoke is causing or expected to cause very poor air quality and reduced visibility in northern Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. These advisories caution that air quality can fluctuate significantly over short distances and time periods.
In British Columbia, several regions, including Fort Nelson, Whistler, and Fraser Canyon, are under a special air quality statement, according to McEwen.
McEwen reported that a moderate risk of storms is expected in southern Alberta on Monday afternoon, with hail and gusty winds likely.
A minor risk of storms is anticipated across much of Alberta and parts of Saskatchewan, McEwen added.
In the Okanagan region of British Columbia, there is a high risk of severe storms, with strong winds and heavy rain predicted.
The islands of Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Saint Martin are also on alert.
McEwen mentioned that Ernesto is expected to become the third hurricane of the year, moving westward through the region.
