Forestry officials have urged all residents of Labrador City to evacuate as a nearby wildfire approaches.
In a news release, Newfoundland and Labrador’s Forestry Department reported “extreme fire behaviour” observed today.
The department warned that within the next 24 to 48 hours, the wildfire could advance towards the Labrador West area, which includes Labrador City and the neighboring community of Wabush.
Labrador City, home to approximately 7,450 residents, has asked everyone to head east to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, a six-hour drive away.
In a social media video, Mayor Belinda Adams urged people to quickly gather their essentials and leave.
This is the second evacuation of a Labrador community due to forest fires in the past two months; residents of Churchill Falls were ordered to leave their homes on June 19.
