Heat Warnings Issued for Northwestern Ontario as Temperatures Soar Through Weekend
Environment Canada has issued heat warnings for parts of northwestern Ontario, extending into the weekend. The warnings cover western areas including Kenora, Dryden, Fort Frances, Ignace, Ear Falls, and Sioux Lookout, as well as far northern regions such as Pikangikum, Sandy Lake, and Deer Lake First Nations. Thunder Bay also received a heat warning on Thursday afternoon.
A warm air mass arriving Thursday will bring temperatures near 30°C, with humidex values reaching around 35°C. Nighttime lows are expected near 19°C, offering little relief. Cooler temperatures are anticipated by Sunday night.
Despite the heat, the wildfire hazard across northwestern Ontario remains generally stable. Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services reported low to moderate wildfire hazards throughout the region, with a few high-risk areas.
This heat wave follows recent sweltering temperatures in Western Canada earlier this week. For sun and heat safety tips, the Government of Canada provides resources online.
As of Wednesday evening, seven forest fires were active in northwestern Ontario, with only one not under provincial control.
