Hamilton Hospital Halts Pediatric Tonsil and Adenoid Surgeries Following Tragic Deaths
Hamilton’s McMaster Children’s Hospital announced on Wednesday that it is suspending tonsil and adenoid surgeries after two children passed away following such procedures. The hospital expressed condolences to the grieving families, revealing that one child died the day after surgery, while the other succumbed nine days later.
As a precautionary measure, Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS), the hospital’s operator, disclosed that all scheduled tonsil and adenoid surgeries for patients under 18 are on hold “out of an abundance of caution.” Although HHS declined interviews, they confirmed to CBC Hamilton via email that one child died in May and the other in the current month.
The suspension took effect on Tuesday. HHS clarified that while there appears to be no direct link between the two cases, they are conducting a thorough review of their pediatric tonsil and adenoid surgery program with the assistance of external experts. Emergency surgeries will continue as usual, along with adult ear, nose, and throat procedures. The hospital’s ENT Clinic will also remain operational.
