Trudeau Considered Resignation Amidst Marriage Difficulties

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau revealed in a recent podcast that he had contemplated resigning due to difficulties in his marriage.

Trudeau made this disclosure on an episode of “ReThinking,” which aired on Tuesday. During the show, psychologist and host Adam Grant asked the prime minister how often he considers quitting. Grant posed this question at the 18:28-minute mark of the episode.

Earlier in the episode, Grant pressed Trudeau to clarify remarks he made during a March interview with Radio-Canada, where Trudeau mentioned contemplating resignation on a daily basis.

Trudeau explained to Grant that his comments were intended to reflect his regular self-assessment to ensure his continued dedication to the role, rather than indicating actual thoughts of stepping down.

Despite this clarification, Trudeau acknowledged during the podcast his current low popularity and the growing sentiment among Canadians for him to resign when confronted with criticism.

“No matter how strong the dislike towards me may be, I must continue to consider how I can contribute to improving the lives of Canadians, their children, and their communities,” he remarked.

Trudeau’s personal approval ratings have seen a decline, with the governing Liberals trailing behind the opposition Conservatives. According to the Angus Reid Institute’s Trudeau Tracker, updated as of April 2024, only 28% of Canadians approve of Trudeau as prime minister, while 66% disapprove.

Trudeau’s podcast appearance is seen as part of a broader strategy by the Liberals to appeal to younger voters, as reported by CBC. In the 2015 federal election, the youth vote played a crucial role in Trudeau’s victory. However, recent polling by Abacus Data suggests that younger voters are currently favoring Pierre Poilievre and the Conservative Party of Canada.
