Small Nuclear Reactor Construction in Ontario Completed: Energy Minister
The initial phase of constructing a small nuclear reactor east of Toronto has reached completion. Ontario Power Generation is developing four small modular reactors at its Darlington site in Clarington, Ontario. According to New Energy and Electrification Minister Stephen Lecce, the first phase of construction for one of these reactors has been successfully finished within the allocated time and budget.
These reactors are expected to generate 1,200 megawatts of electricity, sufficient to power over one million homes. Additionally, Lecce announced that a subsidiary of Ontario Power Generation has secured a $360-million contract to assist in the refurbishment of a nuclear plant in Romania.
Under this agreement, Ontario nuclear experts will contribute their skills to the refurbishment project following negotiations between the federal government and Romania regarding work on its sole nuclear facility.
