Ontario Launches Automatic License Plate Renewal Program

Ontario Introduces Automatic License Plate Renewal Program

Ontario drivers will soon experience the convenience of automatic license plate renewals. Beginning July 1, the Ford government announced that license plates for passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, mopeds, and motorcycles will renew automatically 90 days before expiry, provided there are no outstanding fines or tolls, and valid insurance is in place.

Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria highlighted the initiative as a time-saving measure, estimating it will collectively save drivers over 900,000 hours annually. This follows the government’s earlier decision to eliminate license plate sticker fees for passenger vehicles, equating to a $120 annual savings per vehicle.

Vehicle owners will receive digital notifications from ServiceOntario regarding automatic renewal eligibility. Those who prefer traditional mail will continue to receive notifications in that format. Should automatic renewal not be possible for any reason, owners will be notified and can renew manually via online platforms or at ServiceOntario locations.

Until the program’s launch, current manual renewal procedures remain in effect.
