Google Maps Phases Out Another Web Feature

Google Maps Timeline is transitioning from the web to the mobile app, requiring users to access their location history through the app. To facilitate this change, users have until December 1 to make the transition, after which their routes and visits will be automatically deleted.

Google emphasizes that this shift empowers users by granting them greater control over their data, which will now be stored directly on their devices rather than on Google’s servers.

In its latest update, Google announced the removal of the Timeline feature from the web version of Google Maps. Originally known as “location history,” Timeline enables users to track their visited places and traveled routes. Since its inception in 2015, Timeline has evolved to include the feature of organizing images taken at specific locations, offering users a comprehensive overview of their journeys.

In December 2023, Google relocated the storage of location history for users who have opted to activate it (it’s initially disabled). Now, Google Maps’ Timeline is saved directly on users’ devices, further enhancing their data control.

If you use Google Maps on the web, you won’t see any past location history in the Timeline feature. Instead, Google encourages users to install the app to continue accessing this functionality.

To retain existing Timeline data and continue storing new information, users must update to the latest version of Maps, follow provided instructions (which may come as push notifications, in-app alerts, on-screen prompts, or emails), and tap “done.”

According to an email sent to Android Police, users have until December 1, 2024, to switch from the web version to the app. After this deadline, any unsaved data will be lost, although Google plans to transfer up to 90 days of Timeline data to the “first-signed-in device.” Data predating this period will be automatically deleted.

Many users voiced their concerns on Reddit about this transition, while others speculated that Google may use this time to refine the Timeline feature on the app.
