Port of Thunder Bay Kicks Off Shipping Season with Impressive Start

The shipping season at the Port of Thunder Bay is off to a robust beginning. In April, the port experienced a remarkable 36 percent surge in tonnage compared to the previous year. Particularly noteworthy is the revival of grain shipments, marking a significant recovery from the downturns of 2022 and 2023. Compared to the five-year average, grain shipments have surged by 11 percent. Moreover, year-to-date grain exports have soared by an impressive 25 percent compared to the corresponding period of the previous season.

The momentum of a robust potash season persists from the previous year, with April witnessing a remarkable 4.4-fold increase compared to the same period last year. Additionally, the port welcomed 14 more vessels last month than it did in April of the preceding season.
