Nestle Chocolate Plant in Toronto Faces Massive Strike

Hundreds of Nestle employees in Toronto have commenced a strike, declining a proposed agreement negotiated by their union. Unifor, representing 461 workers engaged in various roles such as machine operations, packaging, shipping, and skilled trades at the Nestle plant, announced the strike on Sunday evening.

The Toronto facility is responsible for producing popular chocolate bars like Kit Kat, Aero, and Coffee Crisp, alongside Smarties. Despite the strike, Nestle assures consumers that the availability of these products in stores will not be immediately impacted.

The primary bone of contention revolves around the pension plan, with Unifor members seeking enhancements and rejecting a proposed two-year halt on cost-of-living adjustments. Currently, there are no scheduled negotiation sessions.

Expressing disappointment, Nestle Canada aims to collaborate with the union to facilitate the return of employees to their duties.
