Aamjiwnaang First Nation Declares State of Emergency Due to Industrial Benzene Emissions

The Aamjiwnaang First Nation has announced a state of emergency due to heightened benzene levels in the air.

INEOS Styrolution issued a notice to the community regarding temporary increases in benzene levels on Thursday.

The Tashmoo Avenue facility, via Sarnia-Lambton Alerts, disclosed that benzene levels could exceed 12.5 PPB [parts per billion] during its current unit shutdown stages.

Chief Christopher Plain declared the local state of emergency late Thursday, citing the continuous and excessive release of benzene.

“While a Local State of Emergency is a significant step, Aamjiwnaang is taking this action to enhance our readiness and ensure we have sufficient resources in case further measures are necessary,” stated the release.
