Thunder Bay Transit Secures $19.5 Million to Enhance Infrastructure
“Anything we can do to make transit easier and more accessible, we are so glad that the other orders of government, provincial and federal, are with us,” Thunder Bay Mayor Ken Boshcoff said at the announcement. “They don’t have to be coaxed, the collaboration and partnering is inspiring to see.”
“We’re very proud of our transit operation, and these investments for our community are very heartfelt,” he said. “They will have an immediate impact, and the fact that we are going to be able to continue to provide service for those who really need it, that’s the essence of public service.”
The outlined projects encompass a diverse range of initiatives, such as:
- Establishing new multi-use trails to enhance accessibility at transit stops.
- Overhauling buses to improve their condition.
- Upgrading the Fort William Road transit facility, which involves replacing a portion of the roof and renovating approach aprons.
- Resolving accessibility concerns at 67 bus stops throughout the city.
- Procuring advanced traffic management software to aid in real-time route optimization.
- Acquiring two electric pickup trucks and installing two charging stations at the transit facility (as previously announced).
- Constructing a new secondary access point to the transit facility property from High Street.
According to Transit Manager Brad Loroff, the majority of these projects are slated for completion by 2032.
