The school boards highlighted potential safety and transportation issues linked to the eclipse.

Eight Ontario school boards have opted to reschedule their professional activity (P.A.) days to align with the April 8 solar eclipse.

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) recently voted to adjust its P.A. day originally scheduled for April 19 to coincide with the eclipse.

Additional school boards planning closures for the eclipse include Halton District School Board (HDSB), Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB), Peel District School Board (PDSB), Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board (DPCDSB), Durham District School Board (DDSB), and Peterborough, Victoria, Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board (PVNC Catholic).

On the afternoon of Monday, April 8, a rare celestial event will occur as the Sun, Moon, and Earth align perfectly, resulting in a total solar eclipse.

This eclipse will cast the Moon’s shadow over Earth, traversing from southwest to northeast across North America.

Although eclipses are not rare phenomena in Canada, this upcoming event marks the first time since February 26, 1979, that millions of Canadians will have the opportunity to witness a total solar eclipse near their homes, as noted by Weather Network science writer Scott Sutherland.

As reported by the Toronto Star, the boards adjusted their P.A. days to align with the eclipse, citing concerns about transportation and safety amid the impending darkness.

It’s crucial to supervise children and ensure they have appropriate eye protection during the eclipse. Educate them about the hazards of gazing directly at the sun during this event.
