The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) Issues Recall for Salad Kits and Six-Layer Dip Amid Listeria Outbreak Linked to U.S.
In response to a deadly listeria outbreak in the United States, the CFIA has initiated a recall of President’s Choice and Taylor Farms Mexican-Style Street Corn Salad Kits, distributed nationwide, along with Rojo’s brand Black Bean 6 Layer Dip, distributed in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
These products, containing cheese from Rizo-López Foods Inc., are linked to a multi-state listeria outbreak resulting in 26 infections, 23 hospitalizations, and two fatalities.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) disclosed details of its “multi-year, multi-state” investigation into the outbreak, spanning cases dating back to 2014. Reported infections have occurred across several states including Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency warned that while food tainted with listeria might not exhibit signs of spoilage in appearance or smell, it can still cause illness. Public health officials indicate that symptoms of listeria infection can manifest as early as three days after consuming contaminated food.
The symptoms may encompass:
- Fever
- Nausea
- Cramps
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Headache
- Constipation
- Muscle aches
Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk for severe illness from listeria,
