The details of a dental insurance plan are set to be unveiled by the federal government.

Today, a group of government ministers is anticipated to introduce a novel federal dental insurance initiative, offering direct benefits to eligible Canadian residents. Although the initial claims won’t be processed until May, government officials have outlined a gradual rollout of the program throughout 2024. In a briefing with The Canadian Press preceding today’s announcement, the officials shared details on the condition of anonymity.

A crucial element of the Liberals’ supply-and-confidence agreement with the New Democrats, aimed at securing the opposition party’s backing on significant votes, is the implementation of an insurance plan. The agreement stipulates the creation of a plan that directly extends dental benefits to Canadian residents with a household income below $90,000 and lacking private insurance coverage.

Applications are projected to become available as early as next week, initially targeting qualifying seniors aged 87 and above. However, it will take several months before these individuals can begin to avail themselves of the benefits.

As part of their commitment to the NDP, the Liberals pledged to launch the insurance plan for seniors, children under 18, and individuals with disabilities by 2024. Despite the delay in enrollment and benefits for many eligible individuals, NDP health critic Don Davies expresses his party’s enthusiasm for having a tangible program in progress by the stipulated deadline.

Come 2025, it is anticipated that all uninsured Canadians falling under the family income threshold will be eligible to enroll in the plan.
