Social media creators and podcasts will remain unregulated under the Liberal online streaming law.
Canadian Heritage has unveiled the conclusive policy direction for the Liberals’ contentious Online Streaming Act, designed to modernize the nation’s broadcasting regulations. Today, the final directive for the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission to enact the legislation has been issued.
This signifies the conclusion of the government’s direct involvement with the legislation previously identified as Bill C-11, the Liberal government’s second endeavor to integrate major online streaming services into Canada’s broadcasting framework alongside conventional media like television and radio.
The ultimate policy direction explicitly instructs the CRTC not to enforce regulations on social media content creators or podcasters. The law mandates online broadcasters to contribute to the generation, production, and dissemination of Canadian content, while also aiming to bolster Indigenous content and original French-language programming.
