PHAC reports a fatality in the recent salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupes.

The Public Health Agency of Canada has confirmed a fatality in connection with a salmonella outbreak attributed to Malichita and Rudy brand cantaloupes.

In a recent update posted on Friday, the agency did not provide specific information about the deceased individual but disclosed that there have been 63 confirmed cases of salmonella linked to the outbreak, with seventeen individuals requiring hospitalization.

Throughout November, the agency issued three food recall warnings for Malichita cantaloupes sold between October 11 and November 14.

As of November 24, the advisory has been revised to encompass Rudy brand cantaloupes sold from October 10 to November 24

The distributed cantaloupes have reached various regions of the country, with confirmed salmonella cases reported in five provinces: Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island.

The agency is actively investigating additional potential cases, highlighting that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are concurrently examining a salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupes. They specify that the genetic strain is identical to the one identified in Canada. As of Friday, U.S. health officials have reported two fatalities and 45 hospitalizations nationwide due to the outbreak.
