“‘One Chip Challenge’ product removed from Canadian stores following the tragic death of a U.S. teenager”

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has initiated a food safety inquiry concerning the One Chip Challenge.

This inquiry coincides with the withdrawal of the intensely spicy tortilla chip from both Canadian and U.S. markets by its manufacturer, following the tragic incident of a teenager’s demise in Massachusetts.

While an autopsy is awaiting completion, the parents of the 14-year-old are attributing the incident to the challenge. According to a spokesperson from Texas-based Paqui, the One Chip Challenge is available in Canada in extremely limited quantities.

Participants in this social media challenge consume a chip infused with Carolina Reaper and Naga Viper peppers and then attempt to abstain from consuming water or other food for as long as possible afterward.

Paqui emphasizes that the product is clearly labeled for adults only and is not intended for individuals with medical conditions, pregnant women, those sensitive to spicy foods, or those with allergies to the ingredients.

The spokesperson for Paqui conveys the company’s profound sorrow and extends heartfelt condolences to Harris Wolobah’s family.

Furthermore, she notes that Paqui has observed a surge in teenage consumption and is taking a proactive step by voluntarily withdrawing the product from retail shelves as a precautionary measure.

Additionally, Paqui is facilitating refunds for individuals who have bought the product.

When The Canadian Press inquired about which Canadian retailers carry the chip, a spokesperson from the food inspection agency responded that as of Friday evening, they were unable to provide that information.

Food safety investigations are complex and involve several essential steps to determine if a food recall is required and what specific products to recall. When dealing with potentially unsafe food, the CFIA acts as quickly as possible to collect information and make decisions,” the CFIA said in an email.
