Expanding Dairy Farmer Training in Ontario

The government of Ontario has committed a substantial sum exceeding $300,000 to support the empowerment of young individuals in their pursuit of rewarding and lucrative professions within the dairy sector.

Collaborating closely with the Dairy Farmers of Ontario (DFO), the University of Guelph Ridgetown Campus’ Dairy Herdsperson Apprenticeship (DHA) initiative is set to broaden its horizons. This expansion involves the introduction of a blended, remote learning alternative, catering to students who might not have the capacity to engage in full-time, on-site studies, or those who are presently employed within farms across the province.

Enrollees will acquire knowledge encompassing animal well-being, regular herd care, nutrition, and the operation of agricultural machinery. Through a comprehensive curriculum, they will undergo 480 hours of in-class instruction, receiving firsthand insights from field specialists regarding milking techniques, feeding practices, animal health management, reproductive strategies, and a range of proficiencies pertinent to the dairy domain.

Participants enrolled in the DHA program will additionally undertake a substantial 5,520 hours of on-farm training, constituting a compensated work placement. Within this context, they will acquire practical, hands-on proficiencies such as the operation and upkeep of farm equipment, direct interaction with animals, and the milk processing procedure.

Collectively, these experiences are meticulously designed to equip them with the competencies essential for fulfilling and sought-after roles within Ontario’s dynamic agricultural sector.

Financing for this endeavor is derived from the government’s Skills Development Fund, a substantial initiative exceeding $700 million in scope. This program is dedicated to championing pioneering initiatives that facilitate the alignment of job seekers with the essential skills and training imperative for securing lucrative careers within their local vicinity.

The University’s roadmap envisions the launch of the remote learning curriculum by the year 2024. For additional details regarding the Dairy Herdsperson Apprenticeship program, Visit
