Despite the Steam reviews, Blizzard maintains an optimistic outlook on Overwatch 2.

Last week, Overwatch 2 made its debut on Steam, only to quickly garner the unfortunate distinction of being the lowest-rated game on the entire platform in slightly over three days. This marked a significant setback for Activision Blizzard, even though the predominantly negative reviews were primarily instigated by targeted ‘review bombers’. This situation is unflattering and serves as a reflection of the widespread dissatisfaction within the Overwatch community.

Notwithstanding this controversy, the employees at Activision Blizzard maintain a positive outlook regarding the future of Overwatch 2. The game, which adopted a brand-new free-to-play business model late last year, received mixed reception on Steam. In a statement, Aaron Keller, the Director of Overwatch 2, openly acknowledged the underwhelming performance of the game on the Steam platform while expressing strong optimism for its trajectory moving forward.

Currently, Overwatch has accumulated a total of 152,850 reviews on Steam, with a staggering 91% of them being unfavorable. While this statistic is noteworthy, it’s important to consider that certain malicious motivations have contributed to this exceptionally high negativity.

Nevertheless, Aaron Keller, the director of the game, has taken the opportunity to publicly challenge the notion of Overwatch 2 as a failure. He began by addressing the widely known instance of Blizzard falling short in delivering the player-versus-environment content that had been previously promised:

Many of the reviews on Steam mention the cancellation of the much larger component of PvE that was announced in 2019 as one of their primary reasons for dissatisfaction with the game. I get that. That announcement was about an ambitious project that we ultimately couldn’t deliver.”

Emphasizing the irreversible nature of time, he underscored the team’s unwavering commitment to enhancing Overwatch 2 progressively. This approach involves disregarding the adverse feedback on Steam and persistently implementing scheduled updates, encompassing fresh narratives, cosmetic items, functionalities, and gameplay modes.

However, amidst this, a positive sentiment echoed from Keller:

We’ve heard from many of our core players that the game is in the best state it’s ever been, and many have told us that it feels like we’re really listening to their feedback and that this season is a culmination of that.”

While the game faced review bombing, Keller promptly pointed out that a substantial influx of new players had embraced the Overwatch 2 platform following its Steam release.
